How does the voting process work?

When you enter the polling place, you will begin at the check-in station where poll workers look up your name to make sure you are registered to vote. You will be required to verbally state your name and current address (and party affiliation if it is a partisan primary). The poll worker will verify that you are registered to vote at the address stated.

After confirming this information, the poll worker will print a form that you will sign. You will receive a transaction record that you will take with you to the voting machine area. When a voting machine is available, a machine attendant will take the transaction record and load your ballot. The ballot will contain contests that match the jurisdictions of your residence address. You will select your choices by touching the screen. Poll workers will be available to assist you if you have questions.

After making your selections, you will be required to review your choices. Once you are satisfied with your ballot, you will cast the ballot and confirm, when prompted, to finalize your vote.

May I go to any polling place in Transylvania County?

On Election Day, you vote in your assigned precinct in order to make sure you receive a ballot that contains all races for which you are eligible to vote. If you do not vote in your correct precinct on Election Day, you must vote a provisional ballot. If you think you may not make it to your precinct on Election Day, please consider voting early at an early voting site or absentee by mail. More early voting and absentee by mail information can be found at Early Voting.

Is it important to update my address before Election Day if I have moved?

Yes. If you have moved and do not update your address before the voter registration deadline, you will not be listed in the Poll Book at your new polling place. It is a violation of the law to vote at your old polling place if your move date is greater than 30 days before Election Day.

If you plan to vote on Election Day, It is important to complete and submit a voter registration application before the election's registration deadline.

If you plan to vote at an early voting location, you may update your address and vote at the same time.

How may I vote if I am physically unable to enter the polling place?

Curbside voting is offered at all Transylvania County polling places. To be eligible for curbside voting, you must sign an affidavit stating you are unable to enter the polling place due to age or physical disability. Look for the parking spaces near the polling place entrance labeled "Curbside Voting." A curbside attendant will walk out to you shortly.
